New Releases — April 10, 2012

Accept – Stalingrad (Brothers In Death) CD (Nuclear Blast)
New album from the reunited metal band.

Alabama Shakes – Boys & Girls CD/LP (ATO)
A vibrant fusion of swampy, dirty South rock, blues and soul delivered with punk rock fervor.

Amadou & Mariam – Folila CD (Nonesuch)
Marc-Antoine Moreau, the duo’s long-time manager and producer explains: “The original idea was to make two albums: One was going to be a crossover record made in New York City, where Amadou & Mariam have many musical friends and relationships; and the other was to be a more rootsy album recorded in Bamako with mostly African guests and African percussion instead of a drum kit.”

Kishi Bashi – 151a CD/LP (Joyful Noise)
Orchestral solo project from singer/violinist/composer who has collaborated and toured with Of Montreal, Regina Spektor, and Sondre Lerche. Expands on the majestic sound of his Room For Dream EP, teasing out the baroque mysteries suggested in those songs while sharpening focus.

Bassnectar – Vava Voom CD (Amorphous)
New album featuring guest appearance by Lupe Fiasco. Vinyl version due May 15.Black Dice - Mr. Impossible CD/LP (Ribbon Music)
A decade and a half of evolution has seen this NY-based trio’s amps get larger, and the instrumentation more enigmatic. Drums and bass guitars have been replaced with mixer feedback, processed vocals, and alien sounds that seek to seduce and repulse impressionable ears.

Counting Crows - Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did On Our Summer Vacation) CD (Collective Sounds)
Covers album features tracks originally written by Big Star, Gram Parsons, Pure Prairie League, Travis, Teenage Fanclub, Dawes, Bob Dylan, Kasey Anderson, The Faces, and others.

Dead Sara - Dead Sara CD (Pocket Kid)
Music history is rich with rock bands fronted by dynamic duos. Looking to carry on this yin and yang tradition are two talented young women, singer Emily Armstrong and guitarist Siouxsie Medley, who front Los Angeles’ Dead Sara — an electrifying four-piece rock band whose supercharged music is propelled by Medley’s exhilarating, monster guitar riffs and Armstrong’s powerful, wailing vocals.

Demon Hunter – True Defiance CD/CD+DVD (Solid State)
Demon Hunter’s sixth full-length album continues in their hard rock evolution while embracing the components that have always formed the backbone of their music: true metal, dark rock and balladry. Available in Regular and Deluxe editions.

Devin - Romancing CD/LP (French Kiss)
Devin may be a fresh face on the New York music scene, but this Brooklyn native tends to a time-honored tradition of red-hot rock & roll. (Think Iggy Pop, Jack White and the New York Dolls.) His last job was stacking boxes in a shipping warehouse. He doesn’t do that anymore.

Eight And A Half – Eight And A Half CD (Arts & Crafts)
Justin Peroff of Broken Social Scene + Dave Hamelin and Liam O’Neil of The Stills = Eight And A Half.

Emmure - Slave To The Game CD (Victory)

Hollows – Vulture CD/LP+MP3 (Trouble In Mind)
Hollows have taken the girl group influence of their debut and time warped 20 years, creating a sound that has more in common with Kate Bush than Ronnie Spector and more Go-Go’s than Shangri-La’s.

Imaginary Cities – Temporary Resident CD (Atlantic)
Though Canadian critics often emphasize the soul-music aspect of the duo, Imaginary Cities (a Canadian duo featuring Mari Sarbit and Rusty Matyas of The Weakerthans) utilizes a mixture of musical flavors for a more expansive, often stirring, pop-rock palate.

These harmonically rich, multi-layered pieces breathe with an elemental ebb and flow.

Scars On 45 - Scars On 45 CD (Atlantic)
Scars On 45 are an indie rock band from Bradford, Yorkshire, England.

Seluah – Red Parole CD (Karate Body)
The bulk of Red Parole reflects an early ‘70s mammoth fuzzed out and sweetly melodic guitar aesthetic and giant drums, punctuated by mesmerizing vocals that glide over each track. Features guest spots from Christian Frederickson and Rachel Grimes (Rachel’s).

The Skabbs - Idle Threat CD/LP+MP3 (Jackpot)
35 year-old collection of never-before-issued recordings from 1977-78 Lawndale, CA punks, The Skabbs. Concocting some truly outsider sounds, the band melded jagged Devo-esque rhythms with lightning-fast technical touches that predicted The Minutemen by a few years.

Spiritualized – Sweet Heart Sweet Light CD (Fat Possum)
Seventh studio album. “This time around, I wanted to do something that encompassed all I love in rock & roll music. It’s got everything from Brotzmann & Berry right through to Dennis & Brian Wilson. I’m obsessed with music and the way you put it together and I don’t believe there are any rules.” — J. Spaceman

The Steep Canyon Rangers – Nobody Knows You CD (Rounder)
Deft musicianship, impeccable songwriting, distinctive vocals, and creative arrangements are just some of the qualities that set The Steep Canyon Rangers apart from the rest of the pack. Unafraid to break the mold, whether taking the unexpected musical turn or bringing home the surprising lyric, it’s no wonder that Steve Martin chose them as just the right band to record and tour with.

Sixth album from the hard-rockers.

Trampled By Turtles - Stars And Satellites CD/LP (Thirty Tigers)
