New Releases for January 13, 2023

CDs + Vinyl:

Ahab – The Coral Tombs CD/LP (Napalm)
Following their much acclaimed, chart-impacting 2015 release, The Boats Of The Glenn Carrig, and their epic Live Prey release (2020), 2023 sees extreme doom metal masters Ahab celebrate their 19th band anniversary in glorious style. Inspired this time by Jules Verne’s masterpiece 20000 Leagues Under The Sea, The Coral Tombs is the fifth album from the German four-piece and their first in eight years.

Obituary – Dying Of Everything CD/LP (Relapse)
New release from the death metal band. Dying Of Everything destroys in the time-honored tradition of early Obituary classics Slowly We Rot and Cause Of Death while maintaining the killer studio sound that the band has been perfecting in their own studio since 2007’s monstrous Xecutioner’s Return. Track after track, Obituary solidify their legacy as a death metal institution, churning out some of the heaviest riffs in their career.

Margo Price – Strays CD/LP (Loma Vista)
Extracting herself from expectations, musical genre and the material desires that drive the world, Strays finds Margo Price tackling demons of self-image, self-worth, and more that came in the wake of her recent decision to quit drinking. Instilled with a newfound confidence and comfortability to experiment and explore like never before, Margo Price and her longtime band of Pricetags channeled their telepathic abilities into songs that span rock ‘n’ roll, psychedelic country, rhythm & blues, and glistening, iridescent pop.

Rachel & Vilray – I Love A Love Song! CD/LP (Nonesuch)
Rachael Price and Vilray began performing together in 2015, although they first met in 2003 as students at the New England Conservatory of Music. Vilray formed a couple of bands with Price’s soon-to-be bandmates in Lake Street Dive—Price recalls he had a nimble mind and quick wit when it came to lyrics. It was more than a decade later that Price and Vilray began to collaborate. She had been on the road much of each year with Lake Street Dive and he had been developing his own solo act, just voice and guitar. In 2019, Rachael & Vilray released their self-titled debut album via Nonesuch Records to critical praise; NPR said, “She can sing anything; he can play anything…Tin Pan Alley meets the Lower East Side in a smoky bar, in songs with a twist of humor.”

Velvet Negroni – Bulli CD/LP+MP3 (4AD)
Bulli is a record that trembles with a slick and polished new intensity following a relatively tumultuous life period. It glimmers with an almost-uncomfortable pop sheen, with the lead single “Sinker” whirring with a strutting positivity and rich instrumentation that is at stark odds with the lyrics (“Wake up and do pills like I’m dying of cancer”). Touchstones of leftfield electronic sounds meld with nods to alternative rock, power pop, even tender R&B and deft hip-hop.

VV – Neon Noir CD/2xLP (Spinefarm)
In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history, there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish love metal pioneer Ville Valo. “Loveletting,” the first single off VV’s debut album Neon Noir, suggests this new infernal mix of light and shade is nothing short of a landmark release from one of modern music’s most distinctive and intriguing voices.

Bob Weir – Ace [Reissue/1972] CD/LP (Rhino)
Bob Weir’s 1972 debut album Ace was issued the same year as Jerry Garcia’s Garcia and Mickey Hart’s Rolling Thunder. Ace features all the Grateful Dead members at the time except for Ron “Pigpen” McKernan including Jerry Garcia, Keith Godchaux, Bill Kreutzmann, and Phil Lesh. The album includes studio versions of “Playing In The Band” and “One More Saturday Night” which becam

Goose – Undecided 12” (No Coincidence)
Black w/ white color vinyl pressing. Undecided, a four-song studio release from ascending rock quintet Goose, is the musical byproduct created from a fusion of long- time songwriting with fresh recording practices. The songs have been reimagined by the band in an organic and intuitive way; allowing their unique spirit to shine through. Produced by D. James Goodwin and captured during the recording sessions for Goose’s critically acclaimed 2022 release Dripfield, the EP project is a testament to the band’s versatility, with propulsive guitar riffs, infectious grooves, and emotive lyrics that seamlessly intertwine.

Tord Gustavsen – Opening LP (ECM)
Released last year on CD – now available on vinyl. On Opening, Tord Gustavsen reveals a fresh angle to his particularly unique trio investigations into Scandinavian folk hymns, gospel, chorale, and jazz. With a new fellow-traveler on board, the trio discovers inspired new ways to interact with each other, using innovative approaches to sound and technique in the process. The group’s conversations bring an enticing unfamiliarity to the language the Norwegian pianist has developed over almost two decades of collaboration with ECM.

Kid Cudi – Entergalactic LP (Republic)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl featuring the bonus track “Burrows”. Kid Cudi takes you Entergalactic with his (final?) 10th studio and 8th solo album. The music inspired the new Netflix special while framing the story of two young, ambitious artists falling in love.

Phish – LP On LP 04 (Ghost 5/22/00) LP (Jemp)
Limited-edition orange & red w/ yellow splatter color pressing. The fourth volume in the LP On LP vinyl series is Ghost from the second of two Radio City Music Hall shows. These were the first full-length Phish shows in five months, falling at the end of a week of promotional appearances celebrating the release of Farmhouse. The set is a kaleidoscopic dance party that lit up the room with millennial intensity.

The Rolling Stones – More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies) [Reissue/1972] 2xLP (Abkco)
The Rolling Stones’ More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies) offers hits, deep cuts, and rarities. Rarities include their 1963 debut single “Come On”, covers of “Fortune Teller”, “Bye Bye Johnnie”, & “I Can’t Be Satisfied”, and the 1966 U.K. B-side “Long Long While”. Also included is the stereo version of “Child of the Moon.”

Nathan Salsburg – Landwerk No. 3 2xLP (No Quarter)
The third volume of the Landwerk series by guitarist, archivist and 78 collector Nathan Salsburg. After releasing three acclaimed acoustic guitar records from 2011-2018, Salsburg pivoted with the first volume of Landwerk in 2020. Alone on a tree farm in rural Kentucky, he put on an old 78 by the Jewish cantor Yossele Rosenblatt one winter night and was struck by an organ chord. He sampled it, looped it, and began playing guitar alongside it. It was like “conversing with a ghost” he told Uncut Magazine in 2021. Landwerk No. 3 contains six new compositions across two LPs.

Soundtrack – Music From The Bob’s Burgers Movie LP (Hollywood)
Limited yellow color vinyl pressing. Motion picture soundtrack to The Bob’s Burgers Movie. Making their big screen debut, the ever-relatable Belcher Family faces an all-new catastrophe in this bold, brassy, and bone-dry murder-mystery comedy adventure.

Joanne Shaw Taylor – Nobody’s Fool LP (KTBA)
Released last year on CD – now available on vinyl. Joanne Shaw Taylor was born and raised in the UK and discovered by Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) at the age of 15. Right from the beginning, Joanne’s incredible guitar work and distinctive sultry vocals set her apart from the rest. Her latest studio album, Nobody’s Fool, was produced by Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith. It’s her most personal album to date. Joanne’s writing lays bare love, loss, and the desire to be free of the past through the vessel of catchy hooks and guitar riffs
