New Releases for January 27, 2023
CDs + Vinyl:
The Arcs – Electrophonic Chronic CD/LP (Easy Eye Sound)
In 2015, Dan Auerbach entered the studio with Leon Michels, Nick Movshon, Homer Steinweiss, and the late Richard Swift (who passed away in 2018) to record The Arcs’ debut album Yours, Dreamily in a handful of freewheeling sessions over two weeks. Now, more than seven years later, those same sessions have become the bedrock on which the surviving members fleshed out the anticipated follow-up album, Electrophonic Chronic, a collection of psychedelic rock, gritty funk, and heady, soulful grooves. [An indie store exclusive clear vinyl pressing and an indie store exclusive CD version including a limited-edition patch are available.]
Kenny Beats – Louie CD/LP+MP3 (XL)
The first solo album from Kenny Beats is a spontaneous burst of creativity spurred by an avalanche of despair and imagination. Just 17 songs and 33 minutes, Louie is a hypnotic odyssey of wounded, teardrop soul. Louie presents a side of Kenny, best known for producing seminal full-length albums for some of the world’s most exciting artists (Vince Staples, IDLES, Rico Nasty, Freddie Gibbs, Dominic Fike, and many more) that has not been seen by the world before. Charismatic, self-effacing, and generous, the album reveals the duality of the artist – an enigmatic, introspective searcher who has experienced pain and duress, and alchemized it via looped samples and hypnotic drum patterns.
Bob Dylan – Fragments – Time Out Of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol. 17 2xCD/4xLP/5xCD (Sony Legacy)
The latest chapter in Columbia/Legacy’s highly acclaimed Bob Dylan Bootleg Series takes a fresh look at Time Out Of Mind, Dylan’s mid-career masterpiece, celebrating the album and its enduring impact 25 years after its original release on September 30, 1997. Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.17 follows the evolution of songs written for the album, from intimate early incarnations in the previously unreleased 1996 Teatro sessions through incandescent live renditions showcasing Dylan and his touring ensemble channeling the songs on-stage from 1998-2001. [The five-CD edition adds a wealth of bonus takes and live tracks.]

F***ed Up – One Day CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)
With One Day, F***ed Up has delivered one of the most energizing and intricate albums of their entire career, a massive-sounding record that arrives in deceptively small confines. The hardcore band’s sound has only gotten bigger, more hard charging, with even denser thickets of melody.
Marvin Gaye – Greatest Hits Live In ’76 CD/LP (Mercury Studios)
One of the most gifted, visionary, and enduring talents ever launched into orbit by the Motown hit machine, Marvin Gaye blazed the trail for the continued evolution of popular black music. Gaye performs a hit-laden set at a sold out Edenhalle Concert Hall in Amsterdam during his first tour of Europe in 1976 here. The concert features a number of classics, including “What’s Going On”, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “Let’s Get It On” and many more. Originally released on DVD, this is the first time the audio is available on vinyl and CD.
Green Day – Nimrod. [Reissue/1997] 3xCD/CD/2xLP/5xLP (Reprise)
After establishing themselves as the leaders of a new generation with their first two major label releases, Green Day began to experiment more in the studio on their highly anticipated third Reprise effort, Nimrod. Not only does the band show a willingness to stretch the boundaries of their fast and fetching punk-rock blueprint here but they also offer glimpses of the songwriting ambition that would propel them back onto the world’s stage with their smash punk-rock opera American Idiot. The Nimrod XXV CD and vinyl box sets include previously unreleased Nimrod demos, and a live set from Philadelphia recorded one month after Nimrod was released, and assorted ephemera.
Illiterate Light – Sunburned CD/LP (Thirty Tigers)
With Sunburned, Gorman and Cochran have turned their attention inward to their songwriting and studio craft, creating their most fully realized and ambitious work yet – one that’s full of immediate songs that update and revolutionize the band’s approach to making music. There are rich keyboard and programmed percussion textures now populating their songs, as well as soaring anthemic choruses, slathered with hefty doses of fuzz.
Elle King – Come Get Your Wife CD/LP (Sony Nashville)
Elle King can do many things, ranging from exuberant alternative/punk to soul pop. She’s also been a compelling presence in country music; winning both Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music Awards and breaking the 30-year-old, glass-ceiling record for women on the radio charts with the single “Drunk (And I Don’t Want To Go Home)”. Now she makes it country music official with Come Get Your Wife, a dozen tracks that run a gauntlet of styles and attitudes leaving King’s roots showing.

H.C. McEntire – Every Acre CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)
If naming is a form of claiming, of being claimed, how is one tethered to both the physical landscape that surrounds us, as well as our own internal emotional landscape – at times calm, at times turbulent, and ever changing? H.C. McEntire’s new album Every Acre grapples with those themes – themes that encompass grief, loss, and links to land and loved ones.

R. Ring – War Poems, We Rested CD/LP (Don Giovanni)
Kelley Deal met Mike Montgomery at Candyland, his Dayton, KY Studio, where she was recording a contribution for a Guided By Voices tribute album. It was the beginning of the friendship that would become R. Ring. Shortly after their work together at Candyland, Montgomery was asked to open a show for a band he was recording, and not wanting to play solo, recruited Deal to join him on stage. That show ended up sparking an LP, splits with Protomartyr, Vacation and Quailbones, and many more live shows. Now Reunited at Candyland for their second LP, titled War Poems, We Rested, R. Ring is expanding on their creative process.

Recorded and largely self-produced in Nashville with the help of close friend and engineer Jeremy Ferguson, Asking For A Ride finds Louisville band White Reaper taking a more direct and in-your-face approach, prioritizing the collection’s raw energy and its ability to translate live through ripping and nervy compositions. It’s White Reaper at their most exciting – dialing up the chrome-plated riffs and monster hooks – a welcome reminder of just how much fun rock music can be.
