The Flatlanders – Treasure Of Love CD/2xLP (Rack’Em)
Almost 50 years after the sessions that would make them an “accidental Texas supergroup” (Rolling Stone), The Flatlanders have returned with Treasure Of Love, their first new album in more than a decade. Completed during COVID-19 lockdowns with the help of longtime friend and collaborator Lloyd Maines, the record finds the iconic trio of Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock in classic form, serving up a rollicking collection of twang-fueled, harmony-laden performances full of wry humor and raw heartbreak. While a few songs here are never-before-heard originals, the vast majority of the tracklist consists of tunes the band picked up during their half-century together, some stretching as far back as the group’s earliest performances in the honkytonks around Lubbock, TX, where you might have spotted Willie Nelson or Townes Van Zandt in the audience.
Half Waif – Mythopoetics CD/LP+MP3 (Epitaph)
Half Waif, the project of Nandi Rose, returns with the new album, Mythopoetics. It’s a record about processing past traumas in the quest for a new, sun dappled pathway, and the transformation that takes place as we take each tentative step. Here, Half Waif is shunning the shadowed mass of generational trauma and the patterns passed down to her. Instead, she plants a seed, urging the orange blossom to sprout through the cracks in the concrete. To bring together the world of Mythopoetics, Rose once again collaborated with multi-instrumentalist, film composer and producer Zubin Hensler.
The Rolling Stones – A Bigger Bang-Live On Copacabana Beach 2xCD+DVD/2xCD+Blu-ray/2xCD+2xDVD/3xLP (Mercury Studios)
Welcome to Rio De Janeiro and the Rolling Stones’ legendary show from Copacabana Beach. In front of 1.5 million people, one of the biggest free concerts in history, the Stones’ performance on February 18, 2006 was an historic event; a critical moment in rock ‘n’ roll history. As Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts fire on all pistons from one track to the next, the crowd continues to meet their energy waving Brazilian and British flags while rocking out in the tropical evening sunset. With incredible staging and graphics, this fully restored and remastered concert from their A Bigger Bang world tour now includes four previously unreleased tracks; “Tumbling Dice”, “Oh No, Not You Again”, “This Place Is Empty” and “Sympathy For The Devil”.
Various Artists – Almost Famous [Original Soundtrack/20th Anniversary Edition] 2xCD/2xLP (Geffen)
“Look under your bed – it’ll set you free.” With those enticingly enigmatic words, an empathetic, hip older sister bequeaths to her hyper-smart but nerdy 11-year-old brother her Rosetta Stone to life in the late-’60s: a prized trove of expertly curated rock, pop, and folk albums that set into chaotic motion young William Miller’s eye, ear, and mind-opening journey in director Cameron Crowe’s quasi-autobiographical 2000 ode to rock ‘n’ roll fandom, Almost Famous. The soundtrack includes songs from Led Zeppelin, The Who, Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Todd Rundgren, Rod Stewart, The Seeds, The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, David Bowie, Clarence Carter, Cat Stevens, Thunderclap Newman, original score track by Nancy Wilson and “Fever Dog” by the film’s fictional band Stillwater. [Super Deluxe five-CD and six-LP editions are due August 20.]
The Wallflowers – Exit Wounds CD/LP (New West)
Rock ‘n’ roll is often hard to define, or even to find, in these fractured musical times. But to paraphrase an old saying, you know it when you hear it. And you always hear it with The Wallflowers. For the past 30 years, the Jakob Dylan-led act has stood as one of rock’s most dynamic and purposeful bands – a unit dedicated to and continually honing a sound that meshes timeless songwriting and storytelling with a hard-hitting and decidedly modern musical attack.
Lucinda Williams – Lu’s Jukebox Vol. 2: Southern Soul From Memphis To Muscle Shoals CD/LP (Highway 20)
Revered singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams is working to help independent music venues during this time with the announcement of Lu’s Jukebox. Scheduled as a six-episode series of mostly full-band, HD video performances in-studio, Lu’s Jukebox features a themed set of songs by other artists curated by the multi-Grammy award winner. Largely full-band performances recorded live at Ray Kennedy’s Room & Board Studio in Nashville, TN, Lucinda has poured her heart and soul into each of these episodes. Lu’s Jukebox Vol. 2 Southern Soul finds Lucinda dishing out numbers from Memphis to Muscle Shoals and beyond and tackling the likes of Joe South’s “Games People Play”, Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode To Billy Joe”, Ann Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand The Rain”, Tony Joe White’s “Rainy Night In Georgia” and Al Green’s “Take Me To The River” among others.

The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army (The Glitch Mob Remix) 7” (Third Man)
In 2011, The Glitch Mob created an unofficial remix of “Seven Nation Army” which has amassed unground acclaim including an unforgettable feature in the record-shattering trailer for Battlefield V in 2018. Ten years after its unofficial release, the track is available on 7” vinyl. The B-side is an etching of the Third Man logo.
